Weekly Bread #182

We completed our hundredth hike of 2022 yesterday and we made it a special event. We took the ferry to Angel Island and climbed to the top of Mt Livermore which incidentally is one of the rare mountains named for a woman – Caroline Livermore. The panoramic views from the top were amazing. We could see 3 bridges and the entire bay area. There were partial clouds which transformed the water into startling shades of blue and grey as the sun poked through in spots. After climbing the mountain we toured the Immigration station museum, which told the story of the generations of immigrants – primarily from Asia, who were held so long they carved desperate poetry into the walls.

A hundred hikes is a year is an accomplishment, but one I wouldn’t have recognized unless I counted them. I don’t know how many miles they represent, we average 6-7 miles and sometimes do 12-15, so it was at least a minimum of 600 miles in less than 8 months. Not the 25 miles per day our daughter is averaging on the Pacific Crest Trail, but not bad for a couple of old women in their 70’s.

And in the last year I gained 18 pounds and went up another pound this week. Of course it is all muscle. And, also of course, if you don’t keep track, if you don’t have a map, you might not remember where you have been or know where you are going. History matters.

L’Chaim

Average weight this week is up 1 pound for a total loss of 153.
